The charms of this activity are obvious: You don't need expensive equipment, and you don’t have to be fast for this unique walking experience amidst sparkling slopes. Quite the contrary: Much of the magic of the area around the Steinernes Meer mountain range can be best experienced while walking slowly and deliberately.

However, the area also offers plenty of longer and more challenging routes such as the "Vierawasch" local walking trail. You’ll walk along the Mühlbach and Schrammbach streams, on beautiful trails, and pass the old village mill as well as several rustic-looking manor houses. Many other local walking trails start right at the tourist office in Mühlbach, too.

Mile of Alpine Stars: Following in the tracks of famous ski stars

Wonderful hiking moments, combined with an air of fame and success, can be experienced on the "Mile of Alpine Stars". The trail from Maria Alm to Hinterreit, at the foot of the Hochkönig, not only lets you immerse yourself in a breathtaking mountain setting, but also in the world of VIPs and top-level athletes. Along the trail, the most important national and international skiers have been immortalised on two-metre-tall steel columns. At some point, they all trained for the Ski World Cup on Peter Hörl's race slope in Maria Alm. This unique attraction is meant to resemble the "Walk of Fame" in Hollywood, and it tells you more about the various athletes. Follow in the tracks of the ski stars, learn more about their extraordinary achievements, and compare your own handprint with theirs.
