Diverse routes, magnificent scenic views and invigorating mountain air are the hallmarks of this beautiful holiday destination.

13 trails for beginners & hard-nosed runners

A total of 13 trail running routes lead through the region around Mühlbach am Hochkönig. And they all have one thing in common: The fascination of trail running is not about speed – it’s about enjoying the experience to the fullest.

Beginners should give the Hochkönigman Easy Trail in Maria Alm a try. The trail spans across 9.3 kilometres and 300 metres of elevation gain. The Hochkönigman Marathon Trail, on the other hand, was developed for hard-nosed runners. 46 kilometres connect the villages of Maria Alm and Dienten. If that's still not enough for you, you should tackle the Hochkönigman Endurance Trail. 88 kilometres in length and 5,270 metres of elevation gain: On this challenging route, runners pass the three holiday resorts of Mühlbach, Maria Alm, and Dienten. Marvel at the beautiful mountain scenery, take a moment to smell the scent of the forest, and take a deep breath, as you become one with nature!

In Maria Alm, a Kids Trail was specifically developed for little athletes, who can cover a distance between 500 and 1,500 metres depending on their level of fitness.

Trail running events on Hochkönig

The Hochkönig is also the site of several spectacular trail running events, some of which have given their names to the trails in the region. In early summer, runners compete against each other in the Kumpellauf. It goes back to a tradition-rich mountain run, which – even back in the day – led miners past the Hochkönig and Schneeberg and attracted athletes from all over the world to the Salzburger Land region. In late summer, the Hochkönigman is held. Athletes who compete in this run can choose from seven distances with different elevation gains.
