And yet, you shouldn’t underestimate this unique pastime – snowshoeing is an endurance sport, and it requires quite a bit of strength. At the same time, you’ll strengthen your immune system and boost your vitamin D levels without even noticing, as you enjoy your time between mountain peaks and bright, warm sunshine. Fluffy powder snow or a crunchy ice blanket – snowshoeing is possible almost anywhere. And the best part: You’ll discover places you would otherwise never get to see while skiing or hiking.

Snowshoeing educational trail in Mühlbach
Beginners might want to start in Mühlbach at Arthurhaus in the Livingroom Snowpark Hochkeil. From there, a signposted snowshoe trail of about two kilometres leads you through the wonderful winter world around Hochkönig. It runs from Troiboden at around 1,500 metres above sea level to the Rudolph ski jump and back. In case you didn’t bring your own equipment with you, you can rent snowshoes right on site. Snowshoe newbies can also book tours with certified mountain guides.
And there’s a wide variety of other tours that invite you to explore the picture-book winter landscape around the Steinernes Meer mountain range. Advanced snowshoe enthusiasts can go on a winter adventure on Hochkeil, for instance. This rather demanding tour leads you from the parking lot of Arthurhaus am Hochkeil to Alpengasthof Rapoldsberg – across snow-covered slopes and through picturesque forests.
