Trips between thrills & discoveries

There are things worth seeing in East Tyrol all year. A holiday paradise beyond compare awaits you in the heart of Hohe Tauern National Park. Immerse yourself in a one-of-a-kind idyll in the picturesque village of Matrei in East Tyrol. The village itself is characterised by historic churches, shrines and chapels, and its inhabitants will meet you with warmth. While walking through this introspective place you will discover new things to enchant you time and time again.

We have compiled our top excursion destinations for you here:

One of the most snow-reliable and family-friendly regions in Austria in winter, and a fantastic hiking region around Austria’s tallest mountain, the Grossglockner, in summer. The Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ticks a lot of different destination boxes. The gondolas and cable cars also operate in summer bringing you to the most important starting points for the most beautiful hikes in East Tyrol .

The Adlerlounge gives you a very special view. It acts as a large, modern ski hut in winter and turns into a notable viewing platform in summer. Here you are on eye level with the imposing Grossglockner.

One of the most impressive sights of the region opens up to tourists in the Gschlössltal Valley directly on the foot of the Großvenediger: the indescribable view of the imposing Hohe Tauern glacier landscape. The Innergschlöss is regarded as the most beautiful valley end of the Eastern Alps for a reason. Here you can immerse yourself in the pristine natural scenery, home to many animal and plant species, and offering enticing photo motifs.

The rock chapel enthroned on the left shore of the Gschlösslbach stream at 1,690 metres is worth seeing as well.

The Umbalfälle invite you to take a unique exploration on the first water studies path in Europe. Here you can experience the power a small glacial stream has on the landscape around it. Fully smoothed greenstone, eroded hollow moulds and roaring waterfalls create a unique natural spectacle worth seeing. The Umbalfälle give an insight into the entire beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park and can be reached from Ströden parking ground.

A destination with far-reaching views awaits you embedded in the spectacular scenery of the Dolomites right on the slope: the Dolomitenhütte. Here you can spend unforgettable moments, absorb the high mountain atmosphere surrounding the rustic hut and enjoy the stunning views of the mountain panorama of the Dolomites. The traditional Tyrolean delicacies served in the Dolomitenhütte make this trip perfect.

Aguntum, Tyrol’s only roman city, was a flourishing centre of trade during the first and second century. This is still palpable on the over 30,000 m²-large excavation area. There’s a great overview of the impressive sight from the 18-m-high lookout tower; virtual reconstructions, workshops and interesting presentations are also offered.

Experience a fascinating ride on one of the longest and most impressive "Alpine Coasters" in the Alps! Glide through lush green forests, whiz through 8-metre-high roundabouts, race through exciting curves and over thrilling waves - and much more awaits you.

Children aged 3 to 8 must be accompanied by a supervisor during the ride. From the age of 8, you can bravely set off alone or together with a friend on the 2.7-kilometre descent into the valley.

The highlight at Hochstein in Lienz, East Tyrol, offers an unforgettable experience for adventurers of all ages!
