Matrei in East Tyrol – an Eldorado for ski mountaineers
The conifers stretch toward the sky, the landscape glistens enticingly and the sun blinks through the thicket – scenes like this attract lots of ski mountaineers to Matrei in East Tyrol every year. It’s no surprise as the region offers snow reliability and lots of hours of sunshine. Thus, the area of the Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei is a genuine Eldorado for ski mountaineers. One of the highlights: the daily illuminated slope of the valley piste.
Easy ski tours for beginners
Best head towards the top with a pro – there are many specialised guides and agencies throughout the region. One easy beginner tour, for example, leads from the Weiler Bichl on the Pustertal High Mountain Road to the Compedal ski hut at 1,920 metres. Set aside 1.5 hours for just under 400 altitude metres and a little over two kilometres of walking. Snacks and treats await you in the hut.
Another option is the cosy ski tour from the Wallhorn chapel parking ground to the Bodenalm. Gorgeous winter scenery along the Timmelbach stream is on the itinerary. Again, the hut innkeepers have culinary treats in store. Set aside two hours for this route, covering two kilometres and 500 altitude metres.
Routes for more experienced mountain aficionados

Scaling the Mittlere Malhalmspitze at 3,360 metres is another popular ski touring classic starting at the Essener-Rostockerhütte. Six hours, twelve kilometres and 2,000 altitude metres later you can enjoy the breathtaking summit panorama.
