Matrei in a nutshell

Matrei is a charming municipality in the district of Lienz in East Tyrol. It has about 4,660 inhabitants and is located at 975 metres above sea level. Spanning the entire Tauern Valley and parts of the Isel Valley, the holiday region is surrounded by a one-of-a-kind mountain landscape. Matrei is particularly popular with mountaineers and alpinists, who love the municipality’s traditional and natural charm.

Hohe Tauern National Park

Hohe Tauern National Park is always worth a visit! Join a guided tour with experienced ranger or explore the park by yourself on fascinating theme trails. No matter if you’re visiting only for a day or longer – Europe’s biggest nature reserve is a fascinating experience! What’s more, the many interesting exhibitions at the National Park are a great alternative for rainy days.

Innergschößl glacier trail

This ten-kilometer hiking trail is quite challenging. You need to be surefooted and not afraid of heights to tackle this tour! Your adventure starts at Alpengasthof Venedigerhaus at 1,691 metres above sea level and takes you along a fascinating trail with 24 noticeboards telling you all about the region’s wildlife.

Rock chapel

Built in 1879, this charming, heritage-protected chapel is situated in the Gschlößltal valley to the north of Matrei. With its natural rock vault, this sacral building at 1,690 metres above sea level is a small gem on the left shore of Gschlößlbach!

Kalser Glocknerstraße

The Kalser Glocknerstraße road takes you to Ködnitz valley, one of Tyrol’s most beautiful mountain valleys. At the car park at the end of the street you can catch a first glimpse of the impressive Großglockner. During the warmer months of the year, the region boasts a unique wildlife, making it all the more fascinating to explore. Head up the mountain and dive right into adventure! High-alpine mountain pastures with traditional mountain huts, lush green meadows and forests, refreshing mountain lakes – summer in East Tyrol is full of surprises!

Thanks to its proximity to the Großglockner High-Alpine Road, Matrei is a popular destination for motorcyclists . The curvy road is one of the big highlights for bike fans.

- Hiking and climbing

The region around the Großglockner glacier range, the Großvenediger and the Dolomites offers plenty of great hiking opportunities. What’s more, the hiking trails are peppered with cosy mountain huts serving delicious local treats.
