Zell am See - Kaprun, right in the heart of Austria, is one of the most multifaceted year-round holiday destinations

Kaprun is located directly at the foot of what is probably the region’s most prominent landmark, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. The 3,203 m white summit imposingly shines above the lovely mountain village. This unique Alpine landscape offers sports lovers, families and people looking for relaxation a great choice of activities and adventures right on their doorsteps: hiking and biking on the Kitzsteinhorn, the Schmittenhöhe or the Maiskogel; water sports in and on the crystal clear Lake Zell; paragliding with a view of the 3,000-meter peaks of Hohe Tauern, or a round on one of the most beautiful golf course in the Alps.


Blooming alpine meadows, crystal-clear mountain lakes and the craggy High Tauern mountain ranges – be enchanted during your hiking holiday in the Zell am See - Kaprun region. Snug valley hikes, a hike on lush mountain pastures or scaling a summit – hiking tours in different levels of difficulty please athletic mountaineers and families alike. Regional delicacies at alpine huts and mountain inns provide welcome refreshment. Those who find the ascent too strenuous can take the convenient hiking taxi uphill.

Lama trekking is a hiking experience of a slightly different kind. Hit the Pinzgau mountains together with these four-legged companions – a one-of-a-kind experience that will particularly delight the youngsters.


Kaprun is a former mountain bike world cup location – and with good reason. Uphill or downhill, tricky or easily – whatever you fancy, you’ll find it in Kaprun. A total of 230 km of trails on 16,000 altitude metres can be found throughout the region. Explore the region on your own or see the highlights during a guided tour.

Even bike newbies can show off their skills in Kaprun. Bikepark Maiskogel features the perfect training terrain to familiarise yourself with mountain bikes.

Kitzsteinhorn is the ideal playground for adrenaline junkies with three challenging free-ride trails. If that isn’t enough for you, you can take a 40-minute drive to Bikepark Leogang with even more rapid downhill rides.


Golfers feel particularly at home in the holiday region Zell am See - Kaprun as they find Austria’s largest golf course here. Golfclub Zell am See - Kaprun - Saalbach Hinterglemm features two astounding 18-hole courses Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn in picturesque scenery.

If that isn’t enough, there’s a choice of several golf courses throughout the region, such as Golfclub Mittersill - Stuhlfelden and Golfclub Urslautal Saalfelden. Both are within a 20- to 30-minute drive from Kaprun.

Swimming & water sports

Is there anything better than jumping into cool water on hot summer days? Lake Zell with several public beach lidos and sunbathing lawns is only a 15-minute drive from Kaprun. The crystal-clear lake water isn’t only great for swimming. There are many water sport options around the lake, such as surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddling, sailing and even diving.

If the weather doesn’t play ball, then the Tauern SPA in Kaprun or the indoor pool in Zell am See are perfect for water rats. Those looking for an adrenaline rush can join a rafting tour on the Salzach river or a canyoning tour in one of the many gorges.


Cyclists certainly get their money’s worth in sunny Salzachtal. Enjoy the scenically most beautiful valley rides for connoisseurs, such as the famous Tauernradweg leading directly past AlpenParks Hotel Orgler Kaprun. Explore the surroundings without working up too much of a sweat using an e-bike, which can be rented directly in Kaprun.

Racing cyclists can give the Ironman 70.3 a shot. The world championship circuit leads throughout the entire Pinzgau with 90 km and 950 altitude metres. Another racing cyclist’s highlight is a tour on the Grossglockner, which is only a few kilometres from Kaprun.

Climbing in Salzburg’s mountains

The fixed rope route at the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs is the world’s highest-altitude fixed rope route at a dam. Extraordinary climbing elements aside, the impressive panoramic view of the Hohe Tauern National Park also wows adrenaline fans. Beginners and advanced climbers can look forward to a thrilling climbing experience. Professional mountain guides offer courses for beginners as well as guided fixed rope tours.

Alternative programme

Riding across fields or along the lake, horse aficionados can experience the landscape from a different perspective on long riding trips. Zell am See-Kaprun also offers the best conditions for tennis players: Swing the racket in modern tennis halls and on well-maintained outdoor courts. The many crazy golf facilities and bowling alleys in the region, however, require a safe and steady hand.

Glacier Kitzsteinhorn

Distance 6 km
3,203 m high glacier open for skiing in autumn, winter and spring, and for hiking in winter. Breathtaking views from Gipfelwelt 3000 – Salzburg’s highest panoramic platform.

High mountain reservoirs Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden

Distance 6.5 km
Huge reservoirs at 2,000 m for water and electricity supply. Hiking trails, daily guided dam tours and divine views of the surrounding glaciers.

Castle Kaprun

Distance 1 km
12th century fortification used as an event site. Guided castle tours for all ages Mondays at 4 pm. Site of the annual medieval castle festival in July/August.

Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge and Klammsee

Distance 2 km
Up to 32 m deep gorge formed by a glacier 14,000 years ago. The turquoise gorge lake is particularly popular with families as a local recreation area with its round hiking trail, playground and sports field.

Tauern Spa

Distance 1.3 km
20,000 m² of spa paradise with 12 pools and 13 saunas. Swimming, sauna sessions and relaxing with panoramic view of the Kitzsteinhorn.

Maiskogel Kaprun

Distance 200 m
Popular family ski region in winter, ideal hiking mountain in summer. Several alpine huts ensure an extra dose of energy on an active day of skiing and hiking. The year-round Maisiflitzer toboggan run promises rapid races into the valley at up to 40 km/h.

Zeller See
