Unique holiday destination

The three places on the Hochkönig

The Hochkönig region spans the three villages of Mühlbach, Dienten and Maria Alm, and it combines them into a one-of-a-kind holiday destination. These three small villages with lots of charm, hospitality, and character make the entire region even more special. Come see for yourself!

Maria Alm is the westernmost of the three villages. The community with 2,200 inhabitants is located not far from Saalfelden and the municipality of Leogang. From there it is only a stone's throw to the Kitzbühel Alps in Tyrol as well as to the Steinernes Meer. This karstified mountain range lies partly in Salzburg and partly in Bavaria and impresses with the peaks Selbhorn (2,655 m) and Schönfeldspitze (2,653 m) and many high plateaus. The local mountain of Maria Alm is the Natrun. The Natrun cable car takes you directly from the village center up to the top and is a direct connection to the Abergbahn. This means that the Hochkönig skiing and hiking area is also open to you during your vacation. Maria Alm is also known for the Almer pilgrimage. Every year on August 24, on Bartholomew's Day, people make the pilgrimage across the Steinerne Meer to St. Bartholomew at Königssee in Bavaria.

Mühlbach, with its 1,500 inhabitants, is the easternmost of the three villages in the Hochkönig region and is thus only 6.5 kilometers from St. Johann im Pongau. Miners have been mining copper in this Pongau community for as long as 4,000 years. Mühlbach is one of the most important mining towns in the area. Until the 1970s, miners still went to work every day. You can immerse yourself in this interesting history in the mining and local history museum with its adventure show gallery. However, Mühlbach is not only interesting for amateur historians, but also for sports enthusiasts: 34 lifts, 150 kilometers of prepared slopes, toboggan runs and ski schools make it a perfect destination for an active vacation on the Hochkönig.

Between Maria Alm and Mühlbach lies the village of Dienten. With just over 700 inhabitants, it is the smallest of the three villages. Its Gothic parish church, which stands in the middle of the valley on a hill and is thus clearly visible to all residents, was first mentioned in a document in 1410 and was built of tufa stone. Dienten looks back on a rich mining history. Already from the Middle Ages there was an iron mine here, which was abandoned only in 1864. One of the oldest farmhouses and listed buildings is the Grüneggut. It has been lovingly restored and is now open to the public as a museum. The centerpiece is a fully functional flour mill. Dienten, just like its neighboring villages, has several mountain railroads.
