Through tight curves and to breathtaking viewpoints

Get up high on your bike

Narrow turns, glorious views and a feeling of freedom – all that awaits you on the road. That is, if you decide on a motorcycle holiday in the province of Salzburg. The Hochkönig region in particular is a paradise for anyone with petrol in their veins who likes to put the pedal to the metal and tour on their motorcycle.

And the holiday apartments at AlpenParks Hotel & Apartment score with their ideal location. From there, the 2,941-m-high Hochkönig can be circled and marvelled at from every possible angle. Many other gorgeous destinations such as Steinernes Meer, Berchtesgaden National Park with the Königssee lake, Zell am See, Hallstatt, the Dachstein, Bad Ischl, Gmunden, Kitzbühel, and the city of Salzburg are within reach on bike. A handful of nearby panoramic roads winding through the Alps promise that special adrenaline rush combined with breathtaking views.

Explore the Großglockner High Alpine Road in Salzburger Land – a dream for bikers and nature enthusiasts!

The Alpine Road fascination

The highest-altitude and best-known panoramic road in Austria is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Opened in 1935, it continues to fascinate all ages, especially bikers spending their motorcycle holiday in the province of Salzburg. They can look forward to 48 km of extraordinary motorbiking, taking you and your bike to particularly dizzying heights; the tallest point you can reach is at 2,504 m. All along the way, the imposing Grossglockner comes into view time and time again. Immerse yourself in the unique nature of the Hohe Tauern National Park and feel weightless between the turns.

Those who conquer the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, open from May to early November, should plan for stops along the way to fully absorb the experience. There are also exhibitions, museums and info points along the route to encourage closer engagement with the alpine world. Huts and mountain inns will tempt you with their regional delights, providing the necessary energy for the mighty ride through the mountains.

Other roads through the alps worth checking out:

Open the whole year round, this is the highest-altitude panoramic road in Germany. Reach the 15.4 km alpine section from Berchtesgaden via the Obersalzberg or from Unterau via Oberau. You also get views of the imposing mountain massif of the Hoher Göll, the provinces of Salzburg and Berchtesgaden, the Kehlstein, the Tennengebirge and the Dachsteingebirge, and the Untersberg near Salzburg.

The Stubachtal valley is also known as the gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park. The toll-free Stubachtal Panoramic Road leads from Uttendorf to the Enzingerboden. The 17 km-long valley impresses with 18 lakes, 25 glaciers, and several waterfalls, gorges and canyons. On top of it all there are 13 turns for you to negotiate on your bike.

This unique road connects the villages of Abtenau and Strobl. You will cover a total of 28.5 km. Take in incredible views of the Dachstein massif, the Gosaukamm, or the Tennengebirge and Hagengebirge – and those who look very closely might spy Lake Wolfgang in the distance if the weather’s right.

This 12 km route connects Salzburg and Tyrol as well as Krimml and the mountain pass summit. The Gerlos Alpine Road was designed by Franz Wallack who also planned the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. The Krimml Waterfalls are a great sight along the road. Clear mountain water rushes down 380 metres.

Our tour suggestions

Not entirely sure which tour to pick? We know the best panoramic points and the most rewarding routes and will gladly consult you at reception. For now, we introduce you to two of our favourite tours right here:

Riding around the Hochkönig massif is high up on bikers’ to-do lists. The Hochkönig round tour makes it easy.

  • Length: 240 km
  • Description: First, it’s from Mühlbach to Saalfelden via the other two Hochkönig villages, Dienten and Maria Alm. Reach Pass Strub via Lofer, then travel past St. Johann in Tirol to Kitzbühel. Now it’s time to tackle another mountain pass, Pass Thurn. Shortly after, you reach Mittersill and, eventually, Zell am See. Ride back to Mühlbach via Bischofshofen and Dienten.

The Grossglockner is already in reach in Mühlbach – so how about a tour to Austria’s tallest mountain, the heart of the Hohe Tauern.

  • Length: 188 km (round-trip)
  • Description: Starting in Mühlbach, you first head to Dienten before heading to Lend and Bruck an der Grossglocknerstraße. The next destination is Fusch, and from there it isn’t far till Heiligenblut.
