Hike to the Mitterfeldalm – a family adventure on the Hochkönig

18.08.2025

The region around Mühlbach am Hochkönig in the Salzburg region is a true paradise for hikers and families. A particularly beautiful and easily accessible tour is the hike to the Mitterfeldalm. The sunny alpine pasture at 1,670 meters above sea level offers magnificent views of the striking Mandelwände mountains and far into the valley of Bischofshofen – and is easily manageable for children in around an hour's walk.

Starting point: Arthurhaus – easily accessible by hiking bus

The starting point for the hike is the Arthurhaus, which can be easily and stress-free reached from the AlpenParks Hotel & Apartment Hochkönig by hiking bus. From there, the trail into nature begins.

The route to Mitterfeldalm

From the Arthurhaus car park, follow the signs for “Mitterfeldalm – Matrashaus.” The wide road first leads across an idyllic alpine meadow and then through a short stretch of forest. Soon, the view opens up to reveal the imposing Mandelwände mountains towering above.

After a short climb, the first highlight awaits: a fantastic view of the Bischofshofen valley basin. Continue along the road, which becomes slightly steeper towards the end and leads over a rocky step. Alternatively, you can take a small footpath above the road, which rejoins the main route after a short while.

Enjoyment with panoramic views

Once you reach the top, your efforts are immediately rewarded: a unique panoramic view from the Tennengebirge mountains to the Hohe Tauern makes this place unforgettable. At the rustic alpine hut, you can fortify yourself with regional delicacies while the children explore the meadows and nature.

How long does the hike to Mitterfeldalm take?

The walking time is approx. 1 hour (175 metres altitude difference) from Arthurhaus – ideal for children and families.
