Hike to the Essener Rostocker Hütte in East Tyrol
The starting point for this hike is the Ströden car park at the end of the Virgental valley. There is a large paid car park here. From there, follow the signs towards the Essener and Rostocker huts.
The trail initially follows a forest road for a while into the idyllic Maurertal valley. You will pass the Großvenediger Adventures high ropes course and quickly reach the start of the material cable car. Shortly after the material cable car, the hiking trail branches off to the right. Now it winds its way up through the shady forest along the Maurerbach stream.
As soon as you leave the forest, a magnificent view of the valley and the surrounding glaciers opens up. After another 45-50 minutes, you reach the Essener and Rostocker huts at an altitude of 2,208 m.
A little tip: just below the hut, there are two possible routes – the normal ascent and the steep ridge. We recommend the normal route for the ascent, as you can marvel at the gigantic Maurerbach waterfall here. The hiking trail runs just a few meters next to the waterfall – a truly spectacular experience!
For those who want to continue hiking after the hut: Lake Simony, at an altitude of 2,361 m, can be reached in about 30 minutes. This beautiful mountain lake is set in breathtaking scenery and is definitely worth a visit.
The return route is the same as the outward route.
Facts:
- Walking time uphill: 2-2.5 hours
- Elevation gain: 789 m over 5.4 km
