Hike across the Zunigsee to the Ganitzle

16.09.2022

We start our hike at the Guggenberg parking lot. From our accommodation AlpenParks Hotel Matrei we head towards Virgental and then towards Glanz. Then follow the signs to the "Guggenberg parking lot". There are several free parking spaces available here (but you should arrive early).

We then walk back along the road a little way until we reach a large, old water mill. The hiking trail begins here and is well marked. The first 10 minutes are very steep uphill through the forest. Then you soon reach the forest path. You can follow this forest path or branch off into the forest again and again and take the more strenuous but shorter option.

Depending on which variant you take, you can reach the Zunigalm in a good 2 hours (if you take the shortcuts through the forest, you can make it in 1 hour 15 minutes). The Zunigalm at 1,846m is open and managed from mid-June to the beginning/mid-October. The hiking trail continues to the right above the hut towards Zunigsee. Here we have to climb another 200 meters in altitude until we reach the beautiful Zunigsee at 2,012m. Here, the surrounding mountain panorama is reflected in the lake - beautiful!

From here, you can hike on to the "Kleiner Zunig" summit or take the classic circular tour and hike up to the "Ganitzle" summit with a wooden cross and a bench. From here you have a gigantic view of Matrei and the Virgental valley. You can also see the AlpenParks Hotel Matrei very well from here!

From here it's downhill towards the Arnitzalm (a snack station in the middle of a small alpine village). We then hike the last hour down a forest road to the parking lot.
