Hike to the Birnbachloch in Leogang
The hike starts at the parking lot in Ullachtal in Leogang. To get there, turn off into Rosental at the Ritter bakery in the center of Leogang. Follow the road keeping slightly to the left in the direction of Ullachtal. After passing an underpass under the railroad, turn half right. The road leads steadily uphill until you reach the parking lot after a long ascent.
From here, the well-signposted hiking trail begins, initially leading through shady forest. The landscape soon opens up and the path runs through flowering alpine meadows - with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. In the upper section, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky. However, the path remains easy to follow and eventually leads to the Birnbachloch at 1291 meters above sea level.
The Birnbachloch is an impressive karst spring with an approximately 20-metre-wide rock opening, a natural cave hall. The Birnbach springs from its interior and flows out of the rock here with a powerful flow of water - particularly impressive when the snow is melting or after heavy rainfall.
A special highlight along the trail are several information boards that provide information about the historical ice mining on the nearby Birnhorn glacier. This tour not only combines a nature experience with impressive geology, but also with a piece of regional history.
Don't forget sturdy shoes - especially in the upper section!
