Excursion to the Triefen in Hinterthal
The excursion starts directly at the parking lots near the parish church in Hinterthal in the Hochkönig region. There are numerous free parking spaces here. From there, cross the bridge on the left and follow the hiking signs in the direction of “Triefen”.
The trail runs along the Urslau river into the valley - idyllic and pleasantly flat, making it ideal for families with baby carriages. There are always comfortable benches along the way to take a break.
After around 30 minutes, you reach the Triefen natural monument - a real highlight. Right on the spot, a plaque provides information about the special geological formation: the Triefen is a horizontal spring that pours over an impermeable layer of rock over a width of around 100 meters. The water emerges at a height of around two to three meters and falls down to the Urslau in fine drops like a curtain - a fascinating spectacle reminiscent of gentle rain.
The variety of mosses, ferns and flowering plants that thrive in this humid microclimate is particularly impressive. The Triefen were officially declared a natural monument in 2001.
The way back is along the same path. An excursion worthwhile for young and old!
Facts:
- Walking time to the Triefen: 20-30 minutes
- Elevation gain: 88m
