Hike from Viehhofen to the summit of Sausteige

22.06.2026

The starting point is the town center of Viehhofen. If you’d like to shorten the hike a bit, drive to the small upper parking lot in front of the bridge at the torrent control structure and start from there.

From the parking lot, cross the large bridge (torrent control structure) and follow the forest road toward “Sausteige” or “Sonnseiten-Runde.” After about 45 minutes, a hiking trail branches off to the right—hiking signs point the way here.

The trail first leads across alpine meadows, then through the forest, until you emerge at the Goriaalm (unmanned). From here, continue along the forest road toward the Jahnhütte (also unmanned). Just a short stretch through the forest—and you’ll find yourself back on expansive alpine meadows. Here you have a choice: either the steeper, shorter ascent—or the more leisurely route to the left. It makes hardly any difference in terms of time, so just decide based on how you’re feeling that day.

At the top, at 1,912 meters, the best part awaits: From a wooden bench or one of the wooden loungers, you can take in the view of the surrounding mountains and the Saalfelden Basin at your leisure.

The return trip follows the same route back down into the valley.

Good to know: Since neither the Goriaalm nor the Jahnhütte are staffed, be sure to pack plenty of drinks and a snack. Sturdy footwear and sunscreen should also be packed in your backpack.

We always recommend the OUTDOORACTIVE app for trip planning and navigation. You can use it to plan routes and check your location during the hike. It’s highly recommended.
