Hike across the Edelweiss meadow to the Steiner Almen
The hike begins at the Glanz parking lot in Matrei in East Tyrol, where there are several free parking spaces available. Right at the beginning, a steep ascent through the forest awaits you, which leads to an idyllic alpine meadow with a cozy hut after a challenging 300 meters in altitude.
After the first effort, you pass a fountain and cross the picturesque Edelweiss meadow, always in the direction of Äußere Steiner Alm. The effort of the steep ascent is rewarded with magnificent views of Matrei in East Tyrol. Right next to the edelweiss meadow, there are nice places to sit and take a short break.
The trail continues along a secured mountain path that runs around a ridge. Here you already have a good view of the famous Sudetendeutsche Hütte. The trail then leads slightly downhill through a shady section of forest and over a stream bridge before finally reaching the Äußere Steiner Alm at an altitude of 1914 meters.
From the Äußere Steiner Alm, you can hike on to the Innere Steiner Alm, also known as the Hoanzeralm, in around 40 minutes. The hiking trail first leads across picturesque alpine meadows and then downhill for around 170 meters. On this stretch, you hike above the Felbertauern road, which is always clearly visible.
Both Steineralmen are managed and invite you to take a well-deserved break. You then return via the same route.
