Hike through the Sigmund Thun Gorge in Kaprun
The hike starts at the power plant in Kaprun. Free parking is available right on site, and from there it’s just a short walk to the gorge’s ticket office. Our tip for AlpenParks guests: With the Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card, admission to the gorge is free. As a guest, you can conveniently pick up the Summer Card on the day of your arrival at our reception desk at AlpenParks Orgler Kaprun or at AlpenParks Central Zell am See.
Via well-secured wooden walkways and small bridges, the trail leads through the narrow gorge for about 20 minutes—past thundering waterfalls, smooth-polished rock, and the wild Kapruner Ache. A truly wonderful nature experience, and on hot days, a real insider tip for cooling off in the heart of nature.
At the upper end of the gorge, the beautiful Klammsee lake awaits. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll around the lake, and you can grab a bite to eat at the rustic Klammstüberl or the Schneckenreith alpine inn just above. Our recommendation: Take your time, kick off your shoes, dip your feet in the water—and just enjoy the moment. Allow 30–40 minutes for the walk around Klammsee.
If you’d like to experience the gorge in a different way, you should definitely check out the Klammlichter. From June 19 to October 23, 2026, the gorge will be bathed in colorful lights every week during the summer months, transforming into an almost mystical setting. Admission to this special evening walk does cost extra—but we promise you: it’s worth it.
Good to know:
- Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the wooden walkways can be wet.
- The gorge is not accessible with strollers—there are many steps leading up.
- Dogs are welcome.
- The gorge may only be walked in the uphill direction.
The Sigmund Thun Gorge is one of those must-see attractions in Kaprun. Compact, impressive, and with the Klammsee lake at the end, it’s the perfect half-day excursion.
