From the Moserboden reservoir in Kaprun to the Rudolfshütte
The starting point of the high alpine mountain tour is the Moserboden reservoir in Kaprun. You can park your car conveniently and free of charge in the large parking garage at Gasthof Kesselfall. Alternatively, we recommend traveling by public transport, as this saves you having to retrieve your car later. From Gasthof Kesselfall, you can take the bus and the inclined elevator directly up to the Moserboden reservoir. (Tip: With the Zell am See-Kaprun Sommercard, the ascent is free! You receive the card from one overnight stay in the AlpenParks Resorts in Zell am See-Kaprun)
At the beginning you walk along the dam wall and then turn right onto the Austriaweg towards Rudolfshütte. The path leads for about an hour along the picturesque eastern shore of the reservoir. At the end of the Mooserboden reservoir, you cross the stream, after which the trail winds its way up to Wintergasse, a trough-like valley that leads directly over large piles of rubble up to the famous Kapruner Törl at 2,639 m above sea level.
Once you reach the Kapruner Törl, a scenic highlight awaits you: the north face of the Hohe Riffl (3,338 m) and the Stubachtal emerge on the other side. Very impressive indeed! From here, the descent towards Tauernmoossee begins (approx. 600 meters in altitude).
After crossing the Tauernmoosbach stream, the path climbs again and via the “Steinerne Stiege” (please note: surefootedness and a head for heights are required here! Be particularly careful in wet conditions!), you will soon reach the Berghotel Rudolfshütte and the beautiful Weißsee lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Then take the Rudolfshütte cable car down to Enzingerboden in Uttendorf. From there you can take the bus to the village of Uttendorf and then continue by bus or train in the direction of Zell am See-Kaprun. It is advisable to check the travel times of the Enzingerboden hiking bus in advance!
