Schattberg loop trail in Maria Alm: An easy walking loop with panoramic views

13.07.2026
A leisurely loop hike for the whole family—even on rainy days

If you’re looking for a walking trail in Maria Alm that doesn’t take long but still offers beautiful views, the Schattberg Loop is the perfect choice. The loop is suitable for the whole family, requires no mountaineering experience, and starts right from the town center—no mountain rail or long drive required.

The trail begins at the Maria Alm Service Center. From there, Trail No. 12 leads past the church, along the Haus der Begegnung and the elementary school, to the main road. After crossing the road, turn right and continue along the Urslau stream to the Unterberg district. Here, the route switches to Trail No. 27a, passing the Jetzbachbauer farm toward Hangleiten, before continuing on Trail No. 27 to the Schlossberg and from there gently back to Maria Alm. If you’d like to extend the hike a bit, turn onto Trail No. 27c on the descent to the Peace Chapel—a popular, peaceful stop in the forest above the village.

The appeal of the tour lies primarily at the top of the Schattberg itself: From here, the view opens up over Maria Alm, the Steinerne Meer, and the gentle grassy hills of the surrounding area—without having to hike steeply uphill. That’s exactly why the trail is also recommended as a bad-weather walk: The elevation is moderate, the trail is well-maintained, and sturdy shoes are all you need.

Back in the center of Maria Alm, several cafés and inns invite you to stop for a break.

Tip: Guests staying at the AlpenParks Hotel Maria Alm or the AlpenParks Apartments Maria Alm will find the trailhead just a few minutes’ walk from their accommodations—perfect for a quick stroll in between activities, with no need to drive anywhere.
