Circular hike over the Schönwieskopf peak in Thumersbach
The hike begins at the large hiking parking lot (past the Waldheim Inn) at the head of the Thumersbach Valley. From here, the trail first crosses the stream and then a small wooden bridge. From this point on, follow the trail signs toward Hundstein.
If you’d prefer to hike the loop in the opposite direction, follow the signs toward Schönwieskopf. The route via Hundstein is steeper on the ascent, but you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of Lake Zell along the high-altitude trail and during the descent.
At first, the trail climbs quite steeply through the forest. After a good hour, the trees thin out and you reach a beautiful viewing plateau overlooking Lake Zell and a small alpine hut. From here, the trail becomes much flatter and the views increasingly impressive. Especially from late June through early July, alpine roses bloom here, bathing the slopes in a vibrant pink—a real highlight!
After another 50 minutes or so, you’ll reach the turnoff toward Schönwieskopf. A cozy picnic bench here is the perfect spot for a short break. Then continue left along the beautiful high-altitude trail toward the summit. From here, it takes about an hour to reach Schönwieskopf. Spectacular views of Lake Zell included!
By the way, you don’t necessarily have to climb all the way to the summit—you can also hike past the summit cross a little way below it and head back toward Thumersbach from there. The trail is well-marked and signposted throughout.
Don’t forget sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and plenty of drinks and snacks! There are no places to stop for refreshments along the route.
