Tobogganing in the Gastein Valley - Winter in Austria

Tobogganing

Tobogganing: Winter fun for the whole family

Tobogganing in Gastein Valley

The little sledges made of wood and the streamlined sport sledges made out of the most modern of resources serve only one purpose - fast-paced fun toboggan rides in the Gastein mountains. Family sledges or racing sledges, making their way unhurriedly or at speed into the valley - what type would you prefer during your winter holiday in Gastein?

Originally toboggans were called ‘sledges’ in Salzburg, and were also used in Gastein Valley in farming. The mountain hay which was gathered in summer on the Salzburg Alpine meadows and stored in small ‘hay barns’, had to be collected from the Alpine meadow to feed the animals in Gastein Valley in the winter. Large wood sledges were piled high with the valuable mountain hay. The descent with the heavy sledges wasn’t fun, indeed it was very dangerous. At least two strong men had to work attentively and concentrate so that the sledge’s heavy weight didn’t get out of control.
