In centuries past nature has sometimes showed no mercy to mankind. The long winter especially was not something to be enjoyed as it is today; rather it was often a dangerous time for the inhabitants. This is why there were numerous customs based around winter: the ‘Perchtenläufe’ procession, to drive out winter, or the famous Aussee Flinserl carnival. When the winter had finally passed, spring was then welcomed in with exuberance. The ‘Narzissenfest’ in Altaussee is an expression of joie de vivre and definitely a cultural event which is worth seeing. Colourful church consecrations show you the tradition of the Alps, as does the ‘Almauftriebe’, the yearly cattle drive, and cheery Alpine festivals, where musicians strike up the dance.
